المستخلص

The aim of the study is to account for the syntactic and semantic features of Ibn Abbad's simile showing his own way of expressing it, weather at the time of luxury when he was in power or during his captivity. It is notable that the ratio of similes increased in his poetry during captivity compared to his earlier stage of life. Moreover, war diction increased as well and overlapped with courtship vocabulary at that time.
The syntactic analysis reveals that the element to be compared to usually fill the slot of the predicate functioning as an adverbial of manner, or both elements occur in the genitive case forming a single noun phrase, adverbial phrase or a second object of a dual verb instigating doubt. However, the most recurrent position for this element is that of the vocative.
The Semantic analysis shows a tendency towards concrete similes which occur more than abstract ones. Analysis also reveals that Ibn Abbad used the Arabic particle 'kaf' (i.e. like) more than other related items. He also preferred explicit similes to implied ones. It is also noticed that he used elaborate similes less than unelaborated ones.
